Great Wall by Shirley Sharoff
Shirely Sharoff is the JCBA’s next artist of the week. Originally from Brookyn, New York, Shirley now lives and works in Montreuil, near Paris, France. She studied printmaking at the Atelier Friedlaender and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. In the 1980’s, she became interested in the contemporary artist book, an artform which has existed in France for many years but limited to only a certain format. In 1987-88 Shirley spent a year in Beijing, China, teaching English, which led to the creation of ‘The Great Wall’, and to her continuing fascination with Chinese culture and language. Shirley is motivated to make artist books through the great flexibility and invention that it offers as a medium. An artist book is an adventure, both in the making and the viewing. No two pages are alike in her books with the form being inspired by the subject, or the text.
